Surveyors are an integral part of the buying process. If at any time you need a value of a property you will employ a Surveyor.


What is a Chartered Surveyor?

A Chartered Surveyor is someone who assesses the value and condition of physical assets such as your house purchase.

They are also there to advise when you require planning permission, are renovating a property or with environmental issues. They can also help when creating a new development.

What types of Chartered Surveyor are there?

Chartered Surveying is a diverse Profession and there are several different categories:

  • BUILDING SURVEYORS - advise on the design and construction of new buildings, and repairs and restorations of existing buildings.

  • CONSTRUCTION SURVEYORS - oversee and provide advice on large scale construction projects such as office blocks etc.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEYORS - determine and monitor the effects of buildings on the environment for example advising on the building of property on brown field sites which may have a contamination problem.

  • RURAL SURVEYORS - value property in the countryside such as farms and assist farmers or land owners when dealing with local authorities.

What should I look for?

Like all of the providers featured in ukpropertyclub we recommend you choose ones who are qualified or are affiliated to a professional body. Chartered Surveyors will have completed a degree course that is affiliated to The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors which is the largest professional body of surveyors.

When will I need one?

You would use one if you wanted a valuation for a future or existing project or renovation.

  • Surveyors can value land, buildings or machinery.

  • They can give assistance at the design and implementation stages of a project.

  • Help you in dealing with the planning authorities

  • They can also assess the condition of an existing building and produce a report. This report details any structural or environmental problems, and highlights the solutions and any cost involved. This is an integral part of the buying Part of the buying process.

Can I do my own survey or carryout my own valuations?

We would advise that you don't carry out your own valuations or carry out your own surveys.

  • They are well placed to advise you on valuations, the condition of property and how to deal with the local authorities.

  • You get a professional opinion on the most important investment you can make your house or investment property.

  • The expertise and experience of a Chartered Surveyor results in a more thorough and accurate investigation than anyone else can give you. Their advice is the best when you are about to invest a large sum of money.
